750 Years Since the Mention of the Minorite Monastery in Maribor

750 YEARS SINCE THE MENTION OF THE MINORITE MONASTERY IN MARIBOR

The year 2024 marks the 750th anniversary of the first written mention of the Maribor Minorite Monastery. Maribor Puppet Theatre, the Minorite Cultural Quarter and the Maribor Synagogue will commemorate the anniversary with a symposium and film screening.

The Minorite Monastery with the Church of Mary's Assumption has a rich history. Its position in the cityscape, the history of its creation and its artistic qualities make it one of the most important monuments in Maribor and beyond. Archaeological excavations carried out in preparation for the renovation between 2006 and 2010 have revealed remarkable information about the origins of the monastery and the city, including the fact that some of the preserved elements date back to the 10th or 11th century, making it the oldest discovered building in medieval Maribor, along with the remains of the castle on the Pyramid. The Minorite Order settled into the existing architecture around the years 1973/741. The premises were thoroughly altered and enlarged in the early Gothic style and extensively remodelled in the 17th and 18th centuries. During the Josephine reforms in 1784, the church and the monastery were taken away from the Minorites and used for the needs of the army.

Today, the Maribor Puppet Theatre with the Minorite Cultural Quarter operates in the complex, offering space for puppet shows, stage events, art exhibitions, concerts, workshops and a wide range of cultural activities, thus preserving the spirit of community and cultural exchange that has been present throughout the monastery's history
